The Mayo Clinic’s roots can be traced back to 1864, when the first Dr. Mayo, William Worrall Mayo, moved to Rochester, Minnesota, to examine recruits for the Union army. Twenty or so years later, his sons, Charles and William, joined his practice. They soon started recruiting other physicians with different specialties, hence establishing the first place where patients could go and get advice from doctors with varied backgrounds. This was the first instance of teamwork among doctors. It was also very popular; many patients, including a lot of well-known ones, came there.
Specialties that originated at the Mayo Clinic include orthopedics, neurology, thoracic surgery, dermatology, pediatrics, neurological surgery, and proctology, among others. In 1907, the clinic opened its doors. Since then, many medical discoveries have been made. In 1920, for example, the Mayo Clinic developed a system for grading cancer numerically (stage 1, stage 2, and so on), a system that’s still used today. In 1950, Mayo doctors Edward Kendall and Phillip Hench were awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for their work on developing cortisone to treat arthritis. The clinic has also done pioneering work on heart disease, hip replacement, and psoriasis, among many other ailments. Today, the Mayo Clinic has major locations in Jacksonville, Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona, in addition to Rochester, and employs more than 40,000 physicians, scientists, and allied health workers. It has been a nonprofit organization since 1919 and is owned by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.
