She began by carrying supplies to the battlefield during combat in addition to her regular nursing duties. She was known as a martyr and therefore it made sense that the Red Cross came to be under her direction and leadership.
Mary Breckinridge: You may not necessarily know her by name, but you know of the good that she has provided. She served as a nurse but did so much more than that when she began family care centers. This was a different type of care and therefore was a revolutionary concept across the board. She started by helping people in rural areas where health care options were scarce and then worked hard to establish family care centers where people from every walk of life could come to get their medical needs met.
Margaret Sanger: You have probably never heard of her by name, but you likely know of the organization which she helped to found. The Planned Parenthood organization is something that came to be after she worked so hard to help women who needed it. She wanted to reach out to women who needed birth control and help those in need. After she saw what happened to women who couldn’t afford or didn’t have access to appropriate methods of birth control, she pushed hard to create the organization that is now well known as Planned Parenthood.
Jeanne Prentice: Her work as a midwife will ultimately be what her legacy is all about. She was one of the first and probably best known midwives in history. She has worked hard to ensure that women everywhere can have their babies in the way that they are most comfortable with. She has created an organization that highlights a woman’s ability to have her baby wherever and however she is most comfortable with.
