If the Baby Goes Beyond Five Hours, Should I Wake Him?

Yes, particularly in the early weeks of life if the baby is having difficulty gaining weight. I would wake the baby and then feed, whether he’s breast or bottle fed. Once a good feeding pattern is established and he is gaining weight well, allow the baby to sleep as long as possible through the night (which generally occurs at 2½-3½ months of age—whether solids are added or not). But during the day, I would continue to wake the baby if 5 hours pass between feedings.
